In the letters they claim to have known him from his childhood and that since they have been freed he has done all he can to help secure their rights.

Dear Sir

We whose names are hereunto subscribed must respectfully petition & earnestly ask of your Excellency the appointment of O. H. Whitfield Esq to the office of Chanceller of this District—

We who are among those that were his former servants have known him from his childhood—when we were his slaves he was always kind & liberal to us [strikethrough][unlear][strikethrough]—and
