Governor.

I have just reached here & find that in the 2d Regt alone there are seventy good Soldiers well mounted, but entirely without arms. This deficiency [persists?] to a considerable extent in all of the commands, Please help me as soon as you possibly can for I have not a Solitary man to spare in case of a fight. I am also much in need of some ammunition for Mississippi Rifles. I hope that you will be able to partially supply me from the Confederate States, as I understand that the State has a large claim against the Confederacy—for arms and munitions of war heretofore furnished. The pressing neceseities of my condition, must excuse the urgency of my repeated requests,

His Excellency.
Jno. J. Pettus.

Very Respectfully
your obdt [Svt?],
S J Gholson
Major General
